We have made a small list of the places we have visited that have given us great satisfaction with a modest investment on our part.
Enjoy!
Egypt
Egypt is a must for all self-claiming travelers. From Pharaonic Egypt to present-day Arab culture, traveling through that country is an amazing experience that we describe in this article.
Here we want to put the emphasis on how economical it can be if we travel to Egypt without tour guides.
Being such a visited country, the Egyptian tourism industry is highly developed and being such a high demand destination, prices can be high.
But if you take enough time to research and plan your trip and hire local operators once you get there and not from your home country, you can save yourself a lot of money that you will invest in visiting more destinations.
The key when traveling to a Muslim country is to learn to haggle. It’s amazing to see how a ride that at first you’re told costs, say, $100 turns into a $30 or $20 ride within a few minutes. Haggling is deeply ingrained in Muslim culture.
Malaysia
Its rich culture, gastronomy, welcoming and friendly people with tourists and beautiful scenery, make Malaysia an ideal destination.
Kuala Lumpur, its capital, is a cosmopolitan and beautiful city. Malaysia is one of the so-called “Asian Tigers”, emerging and high-growth economies since the 80s of the last century.
Venezuelans and Latin Americans in general do not need a visa to visit Malaysia. Nearby is Singapore, the city-state-island that surprises the world with its development and educational level. Although Singapore is an expensive destination, it is worth it.
In Penang you can enjoy mural art. The capital of Penang State, George Town was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Among other things, for its picturesque murals that have proliferated throughout the city spontaneously.
In Malaysia, you will enjoy architectural and cultural icons of three religions: Islam, Buddhist and Hindu. Such an amalgam of culture is a breeding ground for cultural variety and tolerance.
Thailand
Beautiful beaches, friendly people who generally speak English, amazing temples, and overall budget tour packages make Thailand a coveted destination for tourists traveling on a budget. And it’s a pretty cheap country.
Thailand is one of the top destinations for digital nomads. Being an economic country if you compare it with Europe, Japan, Canada or the United States is one of the favorite places to do geoarbitraje.
Geoarbitrage is an activity that consists of generating income in hard currency (dollars, euros) through online economic activities while residing in a country like Thailand, with a relatively good quality of life, access to first-rate services, political and economic stability and spending in the local currency, the baht.
All this added to its exotic and mysterious air, tropical climate and scenic beauty has turned Thailand into the residence of a large number of citizens from all over the world.
Argentina
Specifically Buenos Aires, is another favorite destination for digital nomads.
More than any other Latin American metropolis, the mixture of the European and the Latin gives a unique and special character to the capital of Argentina. The birthplace of the world-renowned tango, one of the most refined and sensual dances, its gaucho culture, its exquisite meats and its internationally renowned wines… All this accessible to travelers who are within a budget.
Its cultural and nightlife is another plus. It is said that Buenos Aires begins to live at 22:00 hours (10 at night). The buenoserense is a fan of reading, but also of fun.
To the south of the republic is the village of Bariloche, a small Switzerland where you can ski in winter. The Perito Moreno glacier is a sight not to be missed.
There are star visits (Perito Moreno, Iguazu Falls) that are very popular and that demand makes prices tend to be high. In these cases, find out if the packages are group or private. We took a tour to Iguazu that was expensive, because without knowing, we took a “private” one. There was no planning and the ride was spontaneous and we took the first option.
Colombia
Colombia is a place of contrasts, as is its geography. A country where two oceans meet, the Andes, the Amazon rainforest and the Llanos makes it a region of incredible biodiversity.
It is also home to one of the best coffees in the world and the most diversified coffee industry.
Cities like Medellin and Bogotá are other top destinations for the digital nomad. The nights are filled with rhythm while people come to dance salsa, cumbia and other tropical rhythms, without forgetting the love that the Colombian also feels for culture.
The Colombian, on the other hand, is well known for his cordiality and human warmth for those who visit his land.
Turkey
Istanbul is a city where the modern and the traditional are combined. The Turks are quite modern without giving up their Muslim culture.
The beautiful mosque of Hagia Sophia (which was formerly a Christian temple), the views towards the Baroque, the picturesque bazaars and that medium European and eastern air make Istanbul a beautiful and interesting city.
In the markets and bazaars of the city, carpets and lamps are varied and beautiful. Merchants usually invite you to have tea while an agreement is reached regarding the price of an item.
Although the Orient Express no longer exists, you can take Istanbul as a base of operations to visit by train the rest of Turkey and countries such as Greece, Bulgaria, Armenia or Georgia.
Just like in Egypt, you won’t see a “price list” in bazaars or tour operators. You will need to develop your haggling skills and leave shyness at home. The effort will be worth it, being able to get “discounts” of up to 70% on the initial price.
Conclusions
We have always said that to travel requires more courage than money.
Therefore, with proper research and planning to choose destinations that give us more for our money, we have been able to know distant, exotic and beautiful places, as well as unforgettable people with a rather modest budget.
There are other destinations that we have not visited such as the dalmatian coast or the countries of Eastern Europe or Laos or Bhutan, which do not yet enter the euro zone that are waiting with their hidden beauties to be discovered for much less than you might think.
Those places are on our to-do list!
