When you go on a trip, one of the most important areas that you will have to make sure that you do not fail is communication.
Whether it is to check directions, places to visit, local news or attend to unforeseen events or emergencies, your smartphone is your faithful travel companion.
Therefore, below, we give you some brief tips so that communication is not a problem for you when you go on a trip and enjoy it to the fullest and without worries.
  • First, the obvious: always carry your smartphone with you. Always have it on hand, but not exposed to view. There are kangooro bags with special anti-theft compartments for mobile phones.
  • Make sure to bring the charger too. Do a quick research on the kind of electrical outlets at your destination and find out if you will need an adapter for your charger. One of the worst things is arriving in your hotel room needing to charge your cell phone and discovering that your charger’s flat-pin plug will never fit into the round-pin wall socket.
  • It is better if you buy a SIM card at the destination. Ask for information about the “combos” they offer and depending on the price and the time you are going to be in the place, choose the one that suits you best.
  • What a one-month plan with unlimited internet can cost on average will depend on where you travel. Usually we are talking about US $ 10-12 in Asia. In Europe the prices can be between 30 and 40 euros.
  • Although the ideal is to buy at the destination, start doing your research online before leaving your country of origin. Thus, you will optimize time and when you arrive at your destination, you will have one less thing to worry about.
  • Although we suggest you compare prices between companies before making your trip, the truth is that generally the difference is not much. Competition is strong and prices will be fairly level between companies.
  • Buying your SIM card at the destination airport may seem like a good idea at first. The truth is that everything in airports is more expensive and this is no exception. In addition, many times there are too many people queuing to buy their SIM and you will be a bit pressured and you will end up acquiring the first option that they offer you.
  • It is better if you acquire your SIM outside the airport, on the way to the accommodation. It is available everywhere: supermarkets, commercial premises, telephone stores. They are easily identifiable from the outside and there they take the time to answer your questions regarding the plans. If you have traveled to a city, you will not have major inconvenience.
  • If you’ve gone to a more remote destination, you may need to shop at the airport. Or find out if you can buy it in your own country of origin.
  • When you buy the plan, check if it is unlimited, or for a limited time (usually by the hour or by the day). We recommend unlimited plans. The difference in price is small and you will have the peace of mind of knowing that you are always connected to the internet.
  • In some cases, it may not be worth purchasing a SIM card. If you are going to be in your destination for no more than two or three days, you can always go to any fast food outlet or at your own Airbnb accommodation and take advantage of their hotspots (free internet access and connectivity sites).
These are the tips that we always follow as a habit and that help us to minimize the stress of being in an unknown country and face the unforeseen events that may arise.
