There are places we dream of visiting that help keep our enthusiasm for travel intact.
These places have captivated us by their unique characteristics, their scenic beauty or any other reason that makes us dream.
Below, we share with you our top of places that we want – and we are sure – that we will visit in the coming years.
Come and know some of the wonders that the world has in store for us.
Hillier Lake
In the state of Western Australia, in the archipelago of La Recherche is a unique lake whose waters are an amazing pink color: Lake Hillier.
This amazing place is only accessible by air. From the air, you can contemplate the amazing contrast between the pink of the lake, the green of the forest that surrounds it and the blue of the ocean water.
The origin of the color pink is not known for sure. It is believed that certain bacteria that live in the salt crusts of the lake can produce a pink pigment as a result of their metabolism. But it has not been established for sure that this is the origin of the color of the lake.
Deadvlei Lake
In the Namib-Naukluft National Park in Namibia (South Africa) is the Deadvlei (Dry Swamp).
It is an ancient swamp or marsh that dried up about 900 years ago and whose trees died but did not rot due to the intense heat.
It has the appearance of a sandy lake, surrounded by what are considered the highest sand dunes in the world (350 meters).
The place itself is totally surreal. The skeletons of the dead but still standing trees and their desolate appearance look like they are taken from a dalí painting. From the air, it looks like a white lake surrounded by orange desert.
Mount Roraima
On the triple border of Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana, dominating the Guiana Shield with its 2,810m high, is Mount Roraima.
It is an impressive tepuy (mountains with wide and flat peaks) whose walls are practically vertical and about 400 meters high border it around the perimeter.
There is only one route that can be accessed by non-climbers and it is from the Venezuelan side. The others can only be done by experienced climbers and are extremely difficult.
It belongs to the Guiana Shield, which is 1,700 million years old, making it one of the oldest places on the planet.
Its magic has inspired many literary and film works, such as Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World and Pixar-Disney’s Up.
Lake Baykal
Located in Russian Siberia, near the border with Mongolia, Lake Baykal is a lake of superlatives.
Baykal covers the 22% of the planet’s fresh water. It has a depth of 1,642 meters, which makes it the deepest lake in the world. It is also the oldest, with 25 million years old.
It is the lake with the clearest waters in the world (it can be seen up to depths of 30 meters from the surface) and with an area of 31,722 Km2, it is more extensive than Belgium.
The area where it is located is cold and dry, with temperature ranges of between -19° (winter) and 14° (summer). When frozen, it acquires a bluish coloration, with a whole range of variations of the blue color.
Tourist activities in the surrounding area are numerous.
The Chocolate Hills
In the province of Bohol in the Philippines are the Chocolate Hills. They are unique hills (between 1250 and more than 1770) scattered over more than 50 square kilometers.
These hills are conical in shape and quite symmetrical, whose heights are usually between 30 and 50 meters. Some reaching up to 120 meters.
The hills are covered in vegetation, which turns brown in the dry season, giving it an appearance that has been described as a box of Hershey’s “chocolate kisses”. Hence its name.
Cave of the Crystals
Connected to the Naica Mine, in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico, at a depth of 300 meters, is the Cueva de los Cristales.
Here are huge selenite crystals, some of which are up to 12 meters long, 4 in diameter and 55 tons in weight, making it one of the sites with the largest natural crystals found.
This place is only accessible to miners and researchers, due to its dangerous access, its high temperatures (58 °C) and high humidity (between 90 and 99%). Stays should not exceed 10 minutes.
Studies have been done in which they have found bacteria inside the crystals whose DNA is not related to that of any of the known species.
The cavern is currently flooded and inaccessible.
Avatar Hallelujah Mountain
In the Zhangjiajie National Forest, in the Chinese province of Hunan, is a mountain known as the Sky Column or Avatar Hallelujah Mountain.
This curious formation receives this name for having served as inspiration to the mountainous and forest landscape in the film Avatar.
As the region receives a lot of rain and is humid and foggy all year round, the column-shaped mountain of 1,080 meters high is covered with green, which gives it a unique and unforgettable appearance.
It was formed by climatic erosion and by the action of the dense vegetation that grows in it.
Salar Uyuní
At more than 3,600 meters high, in the Bolivian highlands is the Salar de Uyuní.
It is the largest salt deposit in the world and was formed from several desiccated prehistoric lakes. The salt forms a surface crust a few meters thick and a fairly flat surface.
It is rich in lithium (7% of the world’s reserves) so there were projects to extract it and manufacture batteries for vehicles, but the government has rejected the idea.
After the scarce rains, a still thin film of water forms over the salt flat, making it the largest mirror in the world.
“Incahuasi Island” is a rocky outcrop in the middle of the salt flat, which looks like an island in a white sea. It is populated with giant cacti.
